This b ... ook and the method described within, changed the way I approach opportunity scouting and project selection. The easy to follow FORTH method lays out a step by step plan for identifying great product and service opportunities independent of the customer, market, or geographic location you are trying to explore. It is a neutral methodology that allows the continued use of any ethnography, brainstorming and concept development tools that you might currently employ inside your business today. The magic of the method is that it lays out the roadmap that teams should follow with very clear timelines (20 weeks from start to finish) so that you can schedule a beginning and end for your discovery work. FORTH brings concrete deliverables and timelines to the very fuzzy discovery process, setting it apart from other methods. I have successfully employed FORTH in my discovery work at 3M. It is, in my opinion, one of the best and most straight forward methods available for helping both experts and novices move through the fuzzy front end of discovery and opportunity identification activities. I would recommend the FORTH method to anyone who is tasked with creating new growth businesses, filling future project hoppers or identifying product line expansions/extensions.
