Key Accomplishments

I am an experienced software professional with a passion for quality and a commitment to delivering a complete solution to the customer. I have diverse experience in multiple domains, and I am ready, willing and able to contribute to almost any level of the stack. I am versatile and able to ramp up quickly on new technology.

I've had the good fortune to have had an eclectic career which prevents me from overspecializing. I've kept my interest level high by being able to dive into challenging new opportunities. At Acompli, I was one of two Android developers. Together, we created the Acompli Email & Calendar App from zero to Play Store in 5 months, and we continued to refine it in weekly updates, a practice we continue after Microsoft acquired the company and rebranded Acompli as Outlook. At Amazon Music, I have been able to make a positive impact on the user experience for the Amazon Cloud Player for Kindle Fire and Android, which is used by tens of millions of people. I am particularly proud of the impact I made to the latest app's fluidity, cutting the rate of frame drops nearly in half. At TiVo, I was a key contributor to the Series 4 ("Premiere") DVR and helped drive features and bug fixes for a brand-new implementation of the interface on a very ambitious schedule. At BlueShift Technologies, I was responsible for the entire motion control layer of an industrial robot in a production setting, but I also helped out at multiple levels of serving the customer. During a trip to a customer site in Korea, faced with a malfunctioning robot and a pending delivery, I spent all night troubleshooting until I isolated the trouble to a faulty wiring harness, which I fixed myself.

I love technology and I love its potential to create things that are actually useful and valuable to other people. I am looking for an opportunity to create new tools which will empower people. I feel really fortunate to be in a place and time when there's so much more potential to be unleashed.
Specific technologies don't matter so much to me: the landscape is always changing and today's hot new ticket is tomorrow's old news. (Flash, anyone?) The most important thing for me is to have a chance at grasping the fundamental value of each new bit of kit, and leverage a firm grasp of fundamental theory to make the best use of it.

I like learning new things, and burnishing my skills. In the past couple of years, I've become very proficient in Python, primarily through my own efforts off the clock. This skill has held me in good stead at work, since I have on occasion been able to write Python code to solve specific problems. Mostly, though, I do this for my own benefit, and I've posted the code from some of my side projects at my GitHub page. Usually, these projects address a single, simple need of mine, although I have written a simulation game (jerky screencap here, apologies in advance) which I enjoyed immensely.

I have only posted one application of my own on Android Market. Consistent with my other public work, this addresses a specific need; in this case I wanted to give my wife a simple way to perform percentage calculations. The result is Percentage Gadget, and it currently lives on 10K-50K Android devices. My wife tells me she uses it every single day.

I have recently cultivated a passion for Arduino, the open-source hardware hacking kit. The platform makes it extremely easy to create inexpensive, small, simple, smart machines. To date, I have built a total of five complete Arduino projects, including a wireless light controller and automatic watering machine for our Christmas tree, which was only partially successful (the sap from the tree got back into the water reservoir; next year I will add a check valve to the build). I plan to post the code for all my Arduino projects in time.

I also write, and sometimes produce, my own plays in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. In 2013 I wrote and produced an edgy comedy called Singulariteen at the San Francisco Fringe Festival. We sold out four performances and received a Best of Fringe Award for the play. I also used my Arduino skills to create some of the practical on-stage effects!

to me an entrepreneur is someone who has a passion for something and turns that passion in to a business. I know that Patrick has personal ... passions that he has turned into successful products (i.e. the play he wrote and directed). He certainly has the skill and drive and has done it before, so I see no reason to think he will not do it again.
