Key Accomplishments

Nina Vasan’s commitment to social innovation stems from growing up in Vienna, West Virginia. As a teenager, she founded American Cancer Society Teens, a nationwide network empowering student volunteers to lead social change in their communities through advocacy, education, fundraising, and service. She directed the effort that kept the state’s $1.9 billion tobacco settlement working for the people of WV and prevented loss of funding for disease treatment, prevention, and health education. During the 2008 presidential election, Nina was the Co-Leader of Battleground State Outreach for Barack Obama's Health Policy Advisory Committee.

Understanding that scientific advancement is fundamental to achieving social progress, Nina was a Research Fellow at the Angiogenesis Foundation. Winner of the $50,000 grand award at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, she presented her research on visual learning during the Nobel Prize Festivities in Stockholm. She worked at the World Health Organization in the Office of the Director-General, where she managed Global Health Issues, a report on how the United Nations can advance progress towards the Millennium Development Goals; these results were publicly debuted by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon in his address during the 2008 G8 Summit.

Nina learned the importance of mentoring and empowering others through her participation in Girl Scouts. She received the highest national honor in Girl Scouting for her leadership in using technology to drive social innovation when she given the National Young Women of Distinction award for America's top ten Gold Award recipients. Now she regularly speaks and consults on social responsibility as a lifestyle and also serves on the Advisory Board for Cogito.org, an online community of over 5000 exceptionally talented young scientists and mathematicians in 74 countries.

As West Virginia’s Junior Miss, Nina won the top national prizes for Scholastics and community service, in addition to Spirit of Junior Miss, an award akin to Miss Congeniality voted on by the 50 America’s Junior Miss contestants. An Olympic Torchbearer and National Caring Award recipient, she has been named as one of our country's most promising young leaders by USA Today, CosmoGirl!, Time, Inc./Teen People, and by numerous corporate foundations. She is a Glamour Magazine Top Ten College Women and received Prudential’s Spirit of the Community Award for “America’s top 10 youth volunteers.” She has been featured in eight books and documentaries. Her book, "The Student’s Guide to Social Innovation" will be published by Jossey-Bass (a Wiley imprint) in December 2012. Nina studied Government at Harvard College, was co-President of Harvard Business School’s MD/MBA Association, and graduated from Harvard Medical School, where she was chosen by her classmates to serve as a student commencement speaker. She is currently living in SF and working a resident in psychiatry at Stanford Hospital.
