You Should Know About Me

Key Accomplishments

I founded a semiconductor component company, Mobius Microsystems, based on my PhD research. It was venture-backed by over 15 angels and early-stage VCs as well as tier-1 VCs, Foundation Capital and Menlo Ventures. I sold the business to Integrated Device Technology (NASDAQ: IDTI) and ran the new business unit there for 3 years. Over that tenure, our BU product line won 3 product of the year awards and I was awarded the "Innovator of the Year" Award in semiconductors in 2012 which was presented by UBM, the publisher of EETimes and EDN.

How I like to work with people As a Cofounder

I engage in one of three models:

1. A member of the board with active responsibilities.
2. Contracted consultant with clear and time-sensitive deliverables.
3. An advisory board member with clear goals, though this is the least preferred engagement model.

In any of these 3 models, I consider various compensation models.

As an Advisor

I prefer, and have had success, with two styles of engagement. First is long-term to coach entrepreneurs and set best practices to ensure success for the business. Generally that is captured in a Board of Directors role. Second is as a contracted consultant to focus on developing and delivering high value and modular assets for activities including fundraising, manufacturing, product development, market research and engineering management.

They're my friends  •  Co-Founder and CEO, Lion Semiconductor. Previously PhD student, Harvard University. Harvard grad.
He started a semiconductor company from scratch, grew it into a business and had a successful exit. This is especially challenging and hard ... to see in the semiconductor area. He is not only adept in semiconductor, but also has in-depth expertise and knowledge in HW in general.

They're my advisor  •  Chief Executive Officer and Founder, Movellus Circuits and Graduate Research Assistant, University of Michigan. University of Michigan grad.
Michael is an approachable, helpful, competent and experienced advisor who's well connected in the start-up space in bay area as well as aro ... und the country. He has already helped me make some key strategic decisions in the early stages of my company - which were quite overwhelming to me as a first time entrepreneur. He possesses a rare combination of highly technical expertise as well as executive level management experience. I am excited about continuing our advisor/advisee relationship, and would highly recommend him as an advisor to entrepreneurs in technology.

They're my investor  •  Board Member, Protean Payment and Board Member, University of Michigan Band Alumni Association. University of Michigan grad.
We wanted Michael to be a part of our venture fund as he has massive domain expertise coupled with the ability to found and grow a company. ... During the growth of Mobius, one of the companies he founded, he was an invaluable resource to many University of Michigan students and was frequently contacted because of his entrepreneurial success.
Claude Gauthier
They're my school  •  Co-Founder, C.O.O., OmniPhy. Previously Director of Engineering, and Applications, MoSys. University of Michigan grad.
I've known Michael for several years from our days at the University of Michigan. What makes him a great advisor? Well, the guy took his PhD ... research, commercialized it, took on an enormous market and revolutionized it, navigating all the challenges along the way, finally selling the company to a larger company that could really capitalize on the disruption. Then he worked as an executive in that company, gaining insight into the acquirers mind, ultimately leaving to follow his entrepreneurial passion. He's smart, sharp, astute, helpful, experienced, and wise beyond his years. And he follows his passions without compromise. I'm very happy to count him as a mentor.
Brendan Richardson
We worked together  •  Co-Founder / CEO, PsiKick Inc.. University of Virginia grad.
Michael's quite detailed and delivers exactly what he says he's going to deliver. He was extremely helpful to our company in laying out an ... operating strategy and plan.
Tony Grover
We worked together  •  Managing Director, RPM Ventures. Previously Financial Analyst, Intel Corporation. Kellogg grad. Purdue grad.
Michael possesses a very unique skill set. He is a brilliant technologist with background in semi design (analog, digital, mixed signal) an ... d processing. Michael founded a University spin out based on his thesis work and led the company as CEO and later CTO. In addition to being at the focal point of raising $25M of VC investment, Michael also drove a successful M&A process. Post acquisition, he was general manager of the new division. His direct experience from creating novel disruptive technology to commercializing and building a company around it to driving an exit to running a division within a public company covers the entire life cycle. As an advisor, Michael can bring direct experience to a business or founder(s) that is valuable at each stage of growth.

Michael brings together a remarkable repertoire including hardware and manufacturing, software, fundraising, operations, technology and busi ... ness strategy. He's invented fundmental technologies. He's commercialized new technology. He's built and sold a company. He's an LP in venture funds. We don't like giving up stock. But to get The Machine on our side, it was an easy decision.
