You Should Know About Me

Key Strengths

Leadership • Financial Services • Private equity • Legal • International business • Startups • General management

Key Accomplishments

I co-founded a venture-backed mobile email startup in Silicon Valley where we shipped product, made real revenue, raised an angel round of about $350K followed by multiple venture rounds totaling about $20 mil in equity and debt. I lead the licensing of technology to leading hardware manufacturers (in the U.S. and Japan), and setup joint-ventures with large telcos (in the U.S., Australia, and UK). We setup and ran a full customer service operation, recurring billing, and network operations center. The company was ultimately listed on the Australian Stock Exchange for a while. Of significant importance to me, we also built a fun and rewarding workplace. Several employees later told me it was the best place they had ever worked.

I was COO/CFO at Sertanty/Libraria, another venture-backed startup in Silicon Valley focused on drug discovery tools. We shipped product, raised several million in capital, secured a $2 million government grant, and brought in the company's first big contracts.

I consulted to Energy Innovations, an idealab company, in its early days. My focus was on establishing offshore manufacturing partnerships and identifying key international R&D resources among academia and laboratories.

I helped start the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), which oversees payment systems (credit, debit, and prepaid cards and ACH and wire transfers), credit reporting, mortgages, small dollar lending, debt collection, and student loans.

After the CFPB, I was General Counsel at venture-backed fintech startup Better Finance, where we grew to over $100 mil in revenue. Subsequently I was recruited by another fintech startup, Aliya Financial Technologies, as its founding GC.

I also advise startups on the side. I am currently an advisor to Sindeo (online mortgages), CollegeNode (portal for overseas students who want to study in U.S.), and Percolata (machine vision for real estate and retail analytics). Past projects included helping ridesharing startup (Sidecar) develop its regulatory positioning.

Prior to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, I was a trial attorney at the Department of Justice, where I represented a variety of federal agencies on matters related to financial and corporate issues. And I spent a year on a consumer dispute resolution study for the European Commission while based at the Centre for European Economic Law at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.

I began my career as a private equity analyst (BBH & Co.) and investment banker (Patricof & Co.) in NYC; followed by a stint as a U.S. Commercial Consul in Guangzhou, China, where I helped U.S. companies find agents and distributors and setup joint-ventures. I retain an international outlook, and am now licensed as an English Solicitor.

Proficient in Mandarin and Spanish.

How I like to work with people As a Cofounder

Extensive experience with fundraising (angel, VC, and secured credit), business development (hardware, software, distribution, IP licensing), legal and regulatory issues, and product design and positioning. I have a large personal network (1100+ linkedin connections that I actually know) that includes VCs, engineer, businesspeople, ops folks, etc.

I have firsthand experience building venture-backed startups from scratch and serving as a CEO, COO, CFO, and Legal Counsel. This means I can tackle a WIDE range of issues or quickly find the right person who can help.
