Key Accomplishments

Surviving in the world of online media startups for 17 years is no small achievement. Scoop is only a year younger than Google and has been earning revenue for all that time - and not via Google adwords. To build a news media startup with a local focus in a small country like NZ means not being able to scale - and that has required us to develop products which provide high levels of value to our customers.

As the news media market has evolved Scoop has evolved with it, a challenge which has involved a combination of foresight and action. Around us media companies have come and gone, the advertising business has become a process of chasing rainbows only to see the shiny new thing disappear just as it begins to show promise. Scoop's response to the latest and largest crisis in news website revenue (which has seen clickbait and video business models in vogue) was to move its focus back to the core value that we see ourselves providing. Actionable local news intelligence.

Gaining reliable long term revenues for local general business and poliycial news services is the holy grail of the #futureofnews odyssey - as that is the traditonal function of the news media. With our latest pivot - the "ethical paywall" - we really think we have cracked a viable solution. A legal and social interpretation of the role of news media which gives rise to virtuous-circle relationship with our readers and content providers , delivering sufficient value to both to enable long term stable subscription and licensing revenue streams to be established. The "ethical paywall" was a long shot which paid off and the opportunity to turn our learnings into a global scalable business now looms.

How I like to work with people As a Cofounder

A good question which requires some considerable thought.

As an Advisor

As an advisor my style (which comes from my Journalism background) is usually to immerse myself in understanding the business, its people, its challenges, strengths, weaknesses and needs and then to explore how best I can assist. As I have a range of skills from business strategy to online marketing execution, networking, copy writing and communications strategy I can usually find somewhere where I can usefully contribute.
