Key Accomplishments

I've built an agency with proficiencies in the ultra-competitive AdWords auction (and related paid ad spends), and speak & write to a global audience on these kinds of topics. I also co-founded HomeStars, a startup focused primarily on the Canadian market. As member of the Board of Directors of HomeStars for 9 years, I've patiently advised on the areas where I can add value. In the early days the strategic planning, fundraising, and product direction all required a lot of direct input. Today, the growing team has a full plate. HomeStars is EBITDA-positive with several thousand paying listing clients (advertising revenue, essentially) and, therefore, able to pick and choose when it goes for its next funding round and on what terms. As part of the agency's development going forward, we are working behind the scenes on a toolset that will complement existing marketing automation tools in the marketplace, enacting algorithms via the AdWords and Bing Ads API's. We will be using the tools in-house and not releasing them for commercial sale for at least two years.

Not looking to start any major new ventures at this time, but interested in advising roles where appropriate.

As an Advisor

Advisors are generally only asked to move the needle or fill in the blanks on specifics -- if it goes beyond that to full-scale management or strategy, they should be getting co-founder shares. So my concept of most advisory roles is that the advisor should be able to go deep in their area of expertise so that a startup isn't reinventing the wheel. This sometimes extends to second-guessing or advising on personnel decisions. I have generally stayed out of tough decisions about senior executive hires, but if there is a significant lack of background or judgment in execution level staff, this can lead to clashes that the executive team needs to assess. I'll never recommend for anyone's dismissal (short of the first "webmaster" for one startup I advised, and I say "webmaster" because the coding skills were at the basic stage), but I'll point out how things generally get done in a certain area of competency and leave it to the exec team to decide whether they need to upgrade their team. You definitely need to support the team, but in some cases we can't execute (or keep costs in line) unless changes are made.
