How I like to work with people
As an Advisor

I can help with most issues -- from org structure & people issues, to figuring out the path to market, and helping to choose the right approach to funding and growth. I ask tough questions about the company's model -- it needs to be focused and clear, and founders need to have done their research about who else is already doing similar work. I like being an executive coach, helping leaders learn and grow as their company grows. As a CEO who grew my company from $8 million to nearly $100 million in revenue, I've been there through lots of different growth stages and growing pains, and am an empathetic listener and coach.

Debra has a wealth of both executive and publishing experience. She listens well, asks insightful questions and always has useful suggestio ... ns. When you are starting something new, it's also great to have an advisor with a positive attitude who can be both critical and supportive. I value her creative energy as well as her pragmatic reminders. She has been, and continues to be, an important part of my business success.

I met Debra years ago when I was at O'Reilly Media and took a class from her as part of Stanford's publishing program (she was then presiden ... t of Josey-Bass). A number of her colleagues that I've met have described her as their hero, both in terms of the way she managed her teams and the way she helped JB grow when publishing overall was contracting. I've found her to be not only expert in those areas, but also insightful and generous as a mentor. Indeed, I've always been jealous of the people who got to work with her directly.
