You Should Know About Me

Key Accomplishments

Grok startups. Founded two startups in the '80 with successful exits. Worked at Netscape and Google during their greatest growth spurts as an engineering and technical manager. Taught graduate classes both at Michigan State and Carnegie Mellon (West).

Co-founder of Google's Niantic Labs which created such augmented reality engagements as Ingress and FieldTrip. My key accomplishment is that my teams continually ship quality product, based on a heartbeat model within a "Lean" framework.

Another is I'm skilled with managing people, engineers in particular, in both "worker cube" and "private office" environments. I'm an avid student of matters related to tech organizations: their actions, staffing, growth, and compass. I avoid NDAs (non-disclosures) as such suggests we'd be talking at the incorrect levels about unessential matters.

I'm particularly interested in endeavors whose purpose by nature will be disruptive.

How I like to work with people As a Cofounder

Ask hard, at times embarrassing, questions about the purpose, market, product, and leadership.

As an Advisor

Mainly videoconference/hangout and snappy review of small, terse, documents of record (e.g., Objectives, Actions, etc.).

Hawaii is a strange place for traditional entrepreneurship due to the combination of the geographic disparity of the islands the the utterly ... slow bureaucracy of the state and county governments (e.g., building permits). Thelma understands this and knows how to work with entrepreneurs and guide them in a way to work with the system when necessary (e.g., for resources) and when to avoid "the system" to move things forward. Hawaii is not an easy place for entrepreneurship and Thelma has been effective at working with different groups across the islands to assist with startups and resource guidance.
