Key Accomplishments

Just went live on This is a project that I had been thinking about doing for many years, and finally last summer I decided to put it down on paper and make it happen, from scratch and totally bootstrapped. It is within an industry that I have professional credentials, licensure and deep experience.

I selected a Co-Founder who I knew through a referral and I saw had complementary skills to mine. I designed the Database Schema (tables, fields and keys) and my Co-Founder took the lead on the front end with wireframes and design, including logo. We selected several key vendors with scalability in mind, such as Rackspace, Twilio and Mandrill, and an open source architecture (LAMP).

I spec'd out the project and went to Elance to get my dev and design team. I made a mistake in my first choice of contractor and the scope of the work I gave them. Fortunately they hiccuped on the first deliverable and I fired them and split the project in 2 with one team in Pakistan taking the backend (LAMP Stack/Yii) and a team in India taking the front end design (Twitter Bootstrap/HTML5/CSS3).

During this process I identified a key contractor in Hong Kong to do our "explainer" videos, and we scripted and visualized for them our two key videos.

Along the way we identified the IP we wanted to secure and went through the process of securing a provisional patent on our business method.

This particular business model requires some unique licensing requirements and we formed an S Corp that holds that license. My Co-Founder and I executed a Shareholder Agreement and we ironed out all the issues of ownership, roles and transition in the event things change in the future...death, lack of involvement in the business, sale, drag-along rights, etc.

In addition to what the user sees on the front end of the app, we built out a fairly robust admin functionality, where we, as Admin, have access and control over Users, Auctions, Properties, Configurations and our event based Messaging (made dynamic and had them move it out of the hard code) in both Email and SMS.

Oh yeah, we also threw in some cool stuff with the new Google reCaptcha and some fancy footwork working with Geocoding and the Google API and Autocomplete.

Lots and lots of testing along the way. Our devs used BitBucket and a "remote to Dev to Alpha" protocol. Good news is that there we almost zero problems when we moved from Alpha to Production.

We are now in the marketing phase of our business, realizing we have built a better mousetrap, but have the challenge of cost effective customer acquisition and prudent return on adspend.

Mark has a give for being remarkably analytical and creative at the same time. He has also been through enough in his career that he has wh ... at I call the enterprise mindset which allows him to see past the more romantic aspects of a start up and address the critical business questions. This has meant to me, in the past, that the solutions he develops are already vetted from business point of view.

Mark has a rare entrepreneurial way of thinking while at the same time drawing on a deep understanding of the enterprise mindset. One of Ma ... rk's more impressive facets is that while he is a entrepreneur in every sense of the word he has an uncanny ability to not fall in love with his own ideas which, in my opinion, makes him a very effective entrepreneur.
