Best virtual phone system?

Taking a look at some phone systems for a small company sales force/ event planning team.

Think we've outgrown grasshopper level plans (with minute caps) and we're currently looking at jive and ringcentral. Have any of you used either or the like and able to recommend?

Not RingCentral. Xtelesis has great SMB solutions and partnered with Vidyo for video conferencing. I have a sales person you can contact if you'd like his info.

I would add 8x8 to the list, they also have a building screen sharing and videoconferencing solution. Avoid VirtualPBX.

I can't say enough good things about Ringcentral. And they will work with you on price. Get re-furbed phones on eBay. Sent from my iPhone

I thought ringcentral was just OK. In my case, I wasn't really happy with the sound quality. This could be network related, though. Our site was on grande in the heart of downtown, on a bonded 2 T1 connection. Maybe it's great on other infrastructure. On the plus side they were very easy to deal with.

The two companies I worked for with RIngCentral I had nothing but issues. No ringtone, static, dropped calls, wrong phone number etc...very little support.

VoIP/telecom expert here. Voice over IP is tricky to set up right. I don't know about Ring Central's infrastructure but my experience has been their reviews are a mixed bag. They have plenty of money, as they IPOd recently, so my guess is that in most cases, the issues are on the customer's end. Clients who have used 8x8 have been generally happy with them. The problem with voice is that it has very low tolerance for data loss and data delay. So if a packet is delayed more than 50 milliseconds or so, the phone will probably chuck it because delayed audio creates an annoying walkie-talkie effect. Because of this, it's important to have the network configured so that voice packets are absolute highest priority and don't get delayed by other network traffic. This needs to be done both on the network switch, and also any connections to the Internet. A better solution is to put the phones on their own LAN with its own dedicated Internet connection. This insures that traffic from your regular LAN can't possibly muck up your phone system. Costs a bit more, but paying a tech a couple hundred bucks an hour to troubleshoot your LAN hardware adds up quickly.
