Free Rooms for Meetups?

Hey all,

I'm in Boston and am hosting a meetup to facilitate Virtual Currency Entrepreneurship in February.

To make a long story short, the only obstacle right now is finding space to conduct the learning/networking session in. Does anyone have experience contacting incubators/universities/businesses to donate evening working space for groups? I'd rather have a Private setting rather than just bring everyone to a bar.

I'm planning on contacting a few venues I have in mind, but I'd like to make sure I'm not asking for anything out of the question first!

Thanks in advance to anyone who would like to share.

David

David,

Please email me at ryan@inscrypto and I'll be happy to help coordinate. I help run the Cambridge Bitcoin meetup and the MIT Bitcoin club (which has access to MIT resources and the CIC), and Jeremy Allaire at Circle has offered to help with space for events like these. Let's get this done and make it huge.

Cheers,
Ryan

Hi David, I run the Seattle chapter of Girl Develop It, an international non-profit that offers low cost programming classes to women. We organize our classes and events through meetup.com. I frequently work with area businesses to host our events at no cost. If you are able to find an organization that has a shared interest in your topic, you should be able to find donated space. I would approach them with the messaging that you are searching for sponsorship partners for your meetup group. Not only are many businesses willing to donate space, but you will find some willing to donate food and beverages. The value proposition for them is generally some access to your meetup members, who presumably are an audience that they wish to reach. I also like to structure cross promotion into a sponsorship (add their logo and information to your meetup.com page as a sponsor, allow one of their representatives to spend a couple minutes giving an intro to your group, ask them to promote your events via social media). You may also want to reach out to other meetup group leaders with similar interests and ask them to help you with introductions to potential venue sponsors. Cheers, Heather

Unfortunately I can't help you in Boston, but in the future if you have one in NY, let me know. I might be able to get you space to use at Meetup HQ in Manhattan.
