Suggestions on launching an alpha

Hey FD,

I am about two - three weeks from launching my alpha in the mental health tech space. The distribution model is to sign up psychologists, who will then recommend the product to their relevant patients who get the product for free now and in all future iterations (their will be a subscription model and that is the incentive).

My plan is to ship the alpha on the itunes store and tinker with it as I track how users play with it / iterate from there on out. As I progress, users will just get updates for the newer builds.

I was wondering if there were any other suggestions or platforms on A/B testing an alpha. Were there any other ways people have done it?

All suggestions or thoughts on my process are welcome.

Thanks!
Dhruv

And though I don't know any psychologists, my question was broader -- how do you plan to monetize your efforts, if ever?

I used TestFlight for my alpha and beta testing. It allows me to put checkpoints in my app, watch what areas of the app the users visited, monitor crashes, all without exposing my app to the general public on the iTunes Store. Highly recommended. App distribution is easy. All you need is the email addresses of your test group. Once you have them registered, it's simply a matter of pushing new .ipa files to the TestFlight web site and notifying your users (via TestFlight) that the new version is available for testing. Users install directly from their iOS device email.

@Jason: The product takes evidence based pyschotherapy exercises and puts them on mobile in a user friendly engaging way

@Paul: the business model will either be freemium similar to Lumosity where you get static content for free but pay a subscription for new content. Or, you pay a one time charge for the "basic" content and a subscription for new content every week or so + tracking your data, analysis of your performance, etc.

@Alan: that's interesting, my dev team and I use testflight to share daily builds but could I sign people up and push builds to them without asking them for their UDIDs in advance?

TestFlight takes gathers the UDID of each user during the invitation/registration phase. Once the user has accepted your invitation and registered, you must add the user's UDID (visible in TestFlight) to your list of up to 100 devices that you can use for AdHoc distribution.
