How good is augmented reality as a marketing app for long run ??

We have developed augmented reality app with 2d & 3d content and we are pretty happy with its outcome. The app is designed for promoting and marketing the media world. We know that marketing a product with AR will create new buzz and has good reach but what about its marketing effectiveness during the long run.

Augmented reality as a creative marketing tool has been used in quite a few campaigns over the past decade with Blippar being perhaps the biggest success story. One of the consumer challenges of using AR purely as a marketing message facilitator is that people want to use it for other things after the ad-campaign,if they cannot do that the app quickly gets deleted or forgotten about. Of course there are tech challenges too, first of all convincing people to download an app - not easy and brands are extremely averse at following this path now. Also in low bandwidth environments you need to optimise the delivery of content or face grumpy users. Obviously with the success of Pokemon Go recently there will be renewed interest, but you really need to offer something unique and sticky otherwise your sales efforts will be considerable. A good category to start with is Automotive. Beauty is also an interesting area but most of the brands are already doing AR makeup solutions now. Good luck.

AR is not a marketing app. AR is a new medium, is here to stay. The possibilities are endless.

Best of lucks!

My view is AR will take the place of traditional signage such as billboards and posters.So to answer your question it is here for long run and just getting started. Effectiveness comes down to the creative and targeting.

Defaulting to industrial applications, I believe that AR will have far more applicability in O & M and technical issues than in pure marketing. As Joanne said, it is a medium, not an app.

@Jim,

Just to expand, what you describe is one of the branches of AR, which is image/object triggering. Meaning that when the device (smartphone) identifies the image/object an action is triggered. This action could be displaying a video, a 3D object, linking to a site, etc.

However, there's another type or branch of AR, which is geo enabled. My view is that the big part of AR will be that way, that's why we build Terra Icons.

Wearables (HoloLens, Meta, something like Google Glass) will enable AR even more.

Cheers!
