How do you get user growth with $0 in marketing?

This might be a question of a lot of bootstrapped entrepreneurs in this forum. If you could all share some tips that could make a huge difference to many of us in here.

True. You need strategy and budget. Even if you do it yourself. There is a lot of information about that at my site www.prospectsolutions.ca/marketing outsourcing

With literally $0 (assuming you don't value your time), you could try to find prospects and call them or email them or visit them and get them to sign up as users. This is, of course, totally unscalable and unsustainable if you want to sign up millions of users. But it's actually how lots of companies get their first 100 users or so in order to prove that their service or product has value for a specific category of people.

It all depends on what you are selling, and what you hope to achieve in terms of "user growth". If you are hoping to sign up millions of consumers to use your app with $0 in marketing -- yeah, prolly not gonna happen. If you have a B2B SaaS service and you can define your target prospects, there are some very low cost ways to generate targeted leads, and if you can convert those leads to customers you can bring in investors.

Hi Sam, if you really have $0 to do a marketing campaign, I would highly recommend you get the book "Newsjacking" by David Meerman Scott. He is an expert on using news cycles to get your company free advertising. http://www.davidmeermanscott.com/books/newsjacking/ With time, it is actually possible to do. Good luck!

Be prepared to spend a lot of time focusing on your social media platforms, and outreach to journalists about your brand. Look at what others are doing similar to you, that should give you some clues as well.

What's the product? $0 for a consumer product is different than $0 for SaaS

You can do it yourselfif you're bootstrapping.
Marketing channels:
Social networks - ensure the strong presence in most popular social networks. It doesn't mean "just create a page and never visit it again". It will need regular updates and interesting content.
Website - If you've got a website place the information there. Create a website for your product, just a landing page at least.
Newsletters- if you have some regular audience

There's a lot of options, choose the channel that works best for you but don't forget about others.
