Is work-life balance possible as an entrepreneur?

Before taking the leap of faith I had the luxury of turning the lights off at my office and going home to enjoy my family and friends. However, now with my own business this does not happen anymore. I always think about the business and it is very hard to disconnect. From your own perspective, is work-life balance possible or is that a myth?

Mike, there is no such thing as 'work-life balance." It was made up by HR people for reasons we can all decide for ourselves. The truth is there is only Work-Life Choices. You have decide what's important to you and any one moment and make a choice. You can always change your mind late but you have to live with the decisions you take. BTW lots of money make all those choices much easier!

All might appear to have "unbalance"

I know best selling authors who go on marathons - unbalanced - and are amazing with words.

A genius attorney told me last month "I am defined by what I do, how I make an impact, how I help others. I am compelled." He loves his wife and two kids. His wife is proud of her husband and supports him - though some would say it is "unbalanced".

I like Nigel's - work-life choices.
It ebbs and flows.

i.e. There are people who have no need for additional income but are still driven to do more, build more, impact more.

Hi Mike, some time ago before I left my corporate job I used to think about work-life balance as well; however, today as a Business Coach I can tell you that there is no such thing as work-life balance BUT there is work-life integration. See, if you are trapped into working, working and more working and feel your previous life is being left aside, I'd say it's probably time to get a coach into your life (if you don't have one already). I felt into the same trap even though I am a leadership and life coach myself...I hired my own coach and then things started to make sense and change.

You know, it is extremely easy to get consumed into day to day business tasks (believe me, I get that) but we tend to miss the important fact that the longest we set apart from our family, friends, hobbies, etc, the more impacted (negative) our business productivity gets. When we learn to INTEGRATE rather than "balance" our life with our business, then it begins to feel different and you get to enjoy every single moment whether it is with your family or your clients. Hope this helps...
PS. I strongly recommend you to google for "The wheel of life" and make a little assessment for yourself...you may find some surprising truths there!

Work/Life balance is a myth. You have to force Life Time, and there's never enough. So turn work into life and it will all work out.

I assume you have a desire to be more balanced - tho you don't say this.

If that's accurate, I suggests a few simple agreements w/yourself can make a world of difference. And 1 small step in the direction of creating the "balance" you're after is enough - for today. And more later... What could you agree (w/yourself - and perhaps a spouse or partner as a supporter) that would move you in that direction.
