How do you know when you find the right cofounder?

When you meet your significant other you sense butterflies, you share multiple things that are of interest. I know that finding your cofounder is just like finding the person that you want to marry in business but without the romance.

Hi Fatima. If you are the original founder, and you are looking to hire a cofounder, you have to stop being romantic about it, and get real. First of all, what is your skill, are you a designer, or a developer? If none of those two, then you need two cofounders right there. You will not know right away, you have to see their work, check them out on LinkedIn, talk to others they have done work for, and they have to be domain experts to not only be a designer and programmers, but also understand and believe in your startup. Then you need to get a lawyer to create a corporation, and draw up contracts with equity that vests over the standard four year period. If you fail to do any of what I said, you will live to regret it. The most important thing is, you wrote the question in such a romantic way, I respect your passion about the startup, but use your head, not your heart, in looking for cofounders.

She is a Writer @Donavon Urfalianhence Romantic Expression is likely commonplace.

Aside from the EQ aspects of selecting co-founder's @Fatima Asadare the pragmatic aspects Donovan outlines. There are a number of personality, competence and skillset profiles that can be tested for assuming you have developed such a profile.

If you have or have not you will need an expert at reading/interpreting these tests which are vital in selecting equity partners. Furthermore, in the US it is not uncommon to execute an extensive background check before 'onboarding' the individual.

@Thomas Thanks for pointing that Fatima is a writer.
@Fatima. Perhaps a more prosaic way of saying it is in order. You know that you have found the right cofounder when you experience the joy of getting an insight that gives wings to your words such that there is an absence of any further relevant questions that you could ask him or her. You share a framework of meanings and values such that the vision and mission of the startup are aligned.
