What makes a great leader?

After reading several books on this topic I am still at a loss. What are your thoughts on this?

One who is leading by example, shows vision, delegates well without the need to micromanage, give underlings the credit for group effort, is responsive to subordinates needs and listens to their thoughts.

simplify the image of a leader. For me, as a kid, Glory (the movie with Matthew Broderick leading a regiment with African Americans) was a great impression and example of what a Leader is.

obviously a question that can be answered in million ways. and you should definitely read a lot of leadership books and practice by doing to come to your very own conclusions. but I felt that after years of leading teams and reading a lot of leadership book this one resonated most with me: Jurgen Appelo "Agile Management". At least for the tech space you are adapting your leadership style to tech style and you are following what inspires people to work.

Have you read "Leaders Eat Last" by Simon Sinek?
Leaders are outwardly focused, recognizing that their success comes from the success of their team. No leader wins alone - they can only do it by their team all winning.

I assume you have been led by someone before....so, ask the question of yourself? What leadership qualities did your past leaders have that you admired? What did they lack? If you start there, I think you'll be on your way...

there are different styles of leadership---think of it this way--a flock of geese always trade off the leader when flying in formation and work together for the good of the group--the focus can be on character, interpretation or interaction
