Feedback on AppBoy vs LeanPlum vs Urban Airship - and any other recommendations?

Does anyone have specific feedback from choosing a mobile messaging tool such as AppBoy, LeanPlum, or Urban Airship.

Feature wise, price wise, and ease of use is the feedback I'm looking for.

We need a tool to do mostly transactional messaging (in-app, SMS, email, push, app inbox) for multiple apps.

Are the higher priced versions with all the features something to grow with or is there a less expensive way to get started when we only have 5k MAU...but project up to 50k within 6 months.

We work with all of them including Kahuna and Localytics. These are the main players in the push/SMS space and each has their own unique offering. I'd recommend asking your agency or UA person who they've worked with in the past or your 3rd party attribution provider.

When it comes to push notifications, you can easily build one yourself. Apple doesn't charge developers to send push notifications. Since your budget is low, you are better off getting a developer to build you a rudimentary tool that does this for you. If this is not the answer that you were looking for then I would suggest using Intercom.io or Mixpanel. Mixpanel allows you to do everything that you asked for and more. They have a free tier that'll be enough for you to do what you need to do. Intercom, is the best solution by far. It's easy to use and setup and their customer service will guide you through setting up the software. If you need help or more insight let me know, I will gladly spill all the beans.

Ken makes a good point---if push notifications are all you're going to do, no need for a paid service. But you mentioned in-app messaging, SMS and email as well, which collectively can be cost-prohibitive to develop.

We've used Urban Airship (and a few others) in the past. Great solution, easy to use, scales well. However, I don't think they have an SMS component. Appboy is great but targeted more towards personalization (and I don't think they do SMS either)--and I believe they are pricier. I could be wrong on the solutions lacking SMS, but you may consider Twilio if you need to couple SMS with the other services. Personally, I've had the best overall success with Urban Airship.
