Can I use a companies API and provide the same service they do but in a different area?

I am currently using an API that gives information about products nearby for sale and would like to use a delivery API "Uber for instance" to deliver that product.

1) Can I use the Uber API to deliver items instead of people?

2) Can an API revoke my key for providing a similar service they provide? (ex: use Uber to deliver coffee's in an area)

You might want to look at the document that shows the rules for using the API. All of the ones I use explicitly state that you cannot show the same product info that is already available with the api, and in some cases only the data from that api can be shown in the view controller. This might be extreme but I would check there first or reach out to the companies developer support community. Sent from my iPhone

An API is like a car that is being lent to you. You are being giving permission to use it in very specific circumstances. The agreements we skip over without reading, define what you can and can't do.

Personally I would talk to Uber first. They are lending you their car to usefor a specific purpose.Go outside that purpose and, if they choose, you will pay the consequences.Imagine building a10 million dollar business on the API. NowUber wants their legal and fair share.

There are lots of API developers. Find one, get a lawyer and do it right. I can think of two that would be open to talking with you and work with GEO technologies.

Thanks for the responses.

I am all ears on other API's!

Currently looking at a few but reading more into, this is going to be tough. We currently have one API hooked up providing the information.

Feel free to refer a couple of API's.

Uber has a on-demand delivery service aspect to their business and their model is getting retailers and service companies on board. It's called "UberRUSH" and they have a specific UberRUSH API. You can build a delivery business around it: rush.uber.com/enterprise

I'd talk with the company to see if it's OK to do what you are doing. To be on the safe side, I'd also have a backup plan in case the API goes down.

The problem is that if you build a business around an API and then suddenly they switch off the API, then you've got a problem.

I don't think so as long as you're not violating their rules. To be sure, check these links: Uber API design guidelines: https://developer.uber.com/docs/rides/design-guidelines Terms of use: https://developer.uber.com/docs/rides/terms-of-use Terms of service: https://developer.uber.com/docs/rides/affiliate-terms-of-service -Ben Sharir
