How do we identify and contact yacht owners and brokers for some product polling?

We're building a medical software piece into yacht charters and would like to identify yacht owners and brokers who could answer a few questions.

Individual yacht owners are notoriously private people (the larger the yacht the more anonymous the wish to be). Brokers are easy, go to yachting.com or any of the other magazines and find their ads. Then just call them. Go on a poker run, most boaters with go fast boats also have a cruiser or yacht. Or maybe go to a fishing tournament. You could become a member of a marina or yacht club or get access. Its common for boaters to socialize with friends at the docks in the evening. That could be a easy way to casually talk to boaters. If this was me, I would make a survey on Survey Monkey, and have boaters complete it on a tablet at the docks. Just don t drop it in the water ;)

Hi Anthony, I just did a quick google search and saw this sitehttp://dmdatabases.com/databases/specialty-lists/boat-lists.
I can't vouch for the company but it looks like they sell sailing/boating magazine subscription lists with contact information.
Another idea is to target a popular sailing magazine. On the west coast Latitude 38 is the most popular free sailing magazine. The magazine is available in print and online and they may have space for a new ad. Not sure if the east coast has anything similar. Best of luck.

Your best connections are going to need a reason to help you make contact, what's in it for them. Are you focused on global yacht sales, regional, some specific class of boats (bigger than...specific gear installed...)?

If you ask other yacht charter software companies to survey their customers, what's to stop them from taking your idea? If you ask yachting clubs, what's the incentive that will make responses rise and how will you anonymize responses? If you ask salespeople, what will make it worth them giving you their time?

The three principles in persuasion apply to getting people to participate in research polls too.
1) personal benefit
2) dramatic difference
3) reason to believe

Why does it benefit me (not someone else) to answer these questions? Not just -er (better, faster, cheaper), but how will this be the first, best, or most something? And why should I believe this is possible and that it will meet or exceed expectations.

That may seem to be a lot to fit into a survey, but it explains how individuals are motivated, which will help you get responses once you find a channel (pun intended).
