There are many ways. To name a few: online courses/training, webinars, research papers, ebooks/books, industry/market reports, on demand consulting, tools and resources. ProBlogger has a cheat sheet of sorts, I think.

Gaming Business Review
Over at Gaming Business Review, we don't have ads, but do we do cycle thru a highly curated short list of sponsors, and we change that list every 4-6 months or so. We take on sponsors and give them small block ads (bottom and lower right side), we do lots of surveys for and from our parent company, M2 Analysis and we do new product/feature reviews, executive spotlights, new product announcements, etc., but we don't ask for payment directly for those. The main point being you need to build up an appreciative audience and potential client list, and then try to monetize them with some of the ideas Shardul mentions. We also do events.

Another way to make ad money is by affiliate traffic, but that depends quite a bit on what kind of tech we're talking about. If we're talking consumer products, you can link to Amazon, otherwise you'll be working through affiliate platforms and direct relationships.

The difficulty here is the potential for a conflict of interest. The best way to handle this IMO is to make a clear distinction between your monetary interests and editorial decisions, and as transparent as possible about how you make money. The Wirecutter does a great job with this, with a sidebar note in every article that links to a full explanation of how they operate:
