What challenges / experience did you face while raising funds through an online platform?

I've got involved with a startup in Mumbai that has built a platform allowing users to create and manage fundraisers for registered nonprofits. Somewhat similar products do exist in India and many others worldwide. The team seems to have good features for better user engagement.

It would be great to know from nonprofits' / social projects' perspective, the pain points in using an online platform for crowd-funding. And which have been some good and bad experiences in raising funds through such platforms.

Thanks
Anshumaan

Hello Anshumaan, I am the Director of Development for a non profit in the US and have had the same role at a number of orgs. The benefit and the downfall of crowdfunding campaign is the expectation of if I create a cool campaign people will just magically show up and give money. While some campaigns find that success, the bulk fail time and time again. By setting goals which are high or providing so many perks that the gift does not have much after cost value. I see so many non profit teams just say well lets go crowdfund that... and many of those folks do not have a donor network or cultivation plan to leverage their network into a crowdfund. Training is a major piece for these programs, which many platforms do a bad job. I have used Crowdrise, Go-fund Me, Bolder Giving and others for different campaigns. One of the best was the HuffPo Jobraising challenge because they gave a small non profit ( YouthBiz) a platform to reach new donors. We were the smallest non profit to finish in the top 25 and it helped us raise 30,000 for an org with a $500,000 annual budget. https://www.crowdrise.com/jobraising

My nonprofit just started a Crowdrise campaign, but yes, reaching that demographic, that is more elusive. However, we are noobs here and are just learning how to best optimize this approach.
