How important is a profile picture in determining user quality?

Want to hear from other founders on this topic, more importantly if you run a community based startup.

So following a meeting with the team, addressing on importance of user-quality on community-based platforms: Would you consider such platforms reliant on requiring or expecting it's users to have human-profile-pic a reality? I have personally come across some of these platforms not approving/deleting it's users without profile pictures.

I do understand some platforms were built expecting it's users to abide by such rules but How would you handle users that are not uploading profile pics, let alone human-pics?

I've been involved with community based startups, not my own, and how we enforced profile pictures was letting the user report the picture is not of the person. Once we hit 5 reports, the user in question was notified. Once we hit 10, the user was warned that their picture risked being removed if not changed. At 15, the picture would be removed and the users' account would be locked until a new photo was uploaded. -- OpenPGP: http://hasan.d8u.us/gpg.asc Sent from my mobile device Envoye de mon portable

Hi Ema - we're seeing some of these issues here at SECUR1TY. Many of our users have excellent profiles with quality profile pics (for example:https://secur1ty.com/Hans-PeterSchwebler/), but because of our subject matter (we're a community focused on solving security, privacy, anonymity problems of businesses) - some of our best users don't leave their profile pics, it's their choice and we don't see them as any less valuable to our community.

My. Professional Network Partners tend to agree that if one can't meet someone face to face a real photo is a must. Also. A Facebook photo may not be acceptable in a business setting.

Sid - if someone remote is doing a penetration test of your network, do you need to have their photo?

@Gene perhaps just being a firm believer that in today's era where everything is diverting to online platform, people should start understanding the value of human-profile-pics, especially in cases of peer-to-peer platforms.

Emu, to play devil's advocate I would say not necessarily. For example, in dark web marketplaces where illicit substances, and stolen credit cards are for sale. In this case, human-profile-pics are completely unnecessary and even a hindrance.

Easy. No pic. No connection. No exceptions. I also get notified of pic updates. HA!
