Looking to incorporate video conferencing capability in tutoring app/service- best platform/plug-in?

I'm looking to build a niche tutoring service/app which will match students with prospective tutors and enable them to conduct tutoring sessions using video capability provided by the app (without exchanging any personal information). I know that many such services exist but not for the niche area I am considering.

Is there a platform/service I can leverage that works across device types and OS for video conferencing? I'd appreciate any pointers or suggestions on where to look... Thanks in advance

I'd love to discuss this more with you. WebRTC is what you want here. Also, take a look at Slack and their latest VC announcement. That would be the perfect platform to build into your product.

By the way I have a similar idea to what you are thinking, but around mentorship. Let me know if you want to discuss more. I am pretty up to date on communications technology.

If you want be a web site only solution something like adobe flash media server. You can lease the license or even use a shared hosting service like influxis. This would be quick and cheap. We built a video chat a dating app sometime back and it worked great.

If you require a mobile solution down the road, you can look into opentok or vsee service. Both are fairly easy to integrate with web and mobile clients. Both of them have decent iOS/Android sdks in addition to web widgets. Good luck.

We are working on a very similar idea and after about 8 months of development are ready to launch. Contact me if you want to discuss a strategic partnership or I could consider creating a white label application for you.

Like any software project getting the video to work is only the start.

You have several options.

1. As several others have suggested - try WebRTC. Advantage is that it works on browsers (not all browsers, though) including mobile phone browsers (Chrome), without the need to install any plugins. Downside - not very stable yet. We did build a platform for communication using WebRTC earlier.

2. Use a framework like simpleWebRTC to make your development easier.

3. Use an existing product.

I think adding video to applications is exciting and more options are available. Please make sure that the option you are selecting is scaleable for your requirements.

Best of luck.
