What is the best way to send out a press release about new services/ products?

We have developed a new product and looking to create a buzz during its launch in two weeks.

It is a financial evaluation questionnaire for those who are interested in investing, and our team of financial advisers will analyze the answers, and give advice on whether or not the customer's financial situation is healthy enough to invest.

What are best practices during a product launch, and what should we avoid?

I've tried many news wires with poor or no results. The best way is to build a list of journalists, magazines and websites, track their social profiles (Twitter) and reach them by email with a personal pitch, only for relevant news and PRs of your company

I learned over the many years of doing news wires with poor results, is to just hire a freelance consultant that specializes in certain press releases. They have the best list of journalist in specific areas. Now a days these Freelance consultants are not expensive.

We have had good success with press releases for our clients. Our approach is to develop a "pre" and "post" release strategy to be better capitalize on the increased interest in the topic or product.
I agree with Dr. DeLuz that a PR professional will help improve your results.

As has been mentioned briefly here, there are two ways to go about it:
  1. Go through a traditional press release service
  2. Build a focused list of contacts and reach out to them, or hire someone to do this
You can/should take #2 a step further and try to build more substantial relationships with press/media/influencers. You'll find much better results reaching out to people you've already been in touch with than when sending out cold press releases promoting your new launch. It helps if you initially engage them without directly asking them for anything. Twitter is a great platform for this. Follow them, fav/RT them, and when you have a meaningful comment to make, jump in and say it.

The most effective press strategy would honestly use both 1 & 2 mentioned above. Targeted outreach is great, but if you have an exciting story/launch you want to broadcast widely, a press release service can get you in front of a ton of journalists, and some even guarantee you'll appear on a certain number of sites. The best way to evaluate a press release service is by examining the network(s) they send out to. Different services will be more focused on different areas, eg web vs traditional media. More on that here:
