Would you introduce mindfulness into your company - employees or for yourself?

Mindfulness meditation has a strong relationship to focus, emotional intelligence, and stress reduction. At what stage of the start up, if at all, would you introduce mindfulness to your employees or for yourself/management team?

As I see it, a start up initially is like a rocket that is madly trying to launch, at first the fuel/momentum required is really hot so everybody is scrambling. As the start up takes off, it needs a different (less frantic) more sustained energy and it seems at that stage wellness programs and practices such as mindfulness would be a huge benefit to a company's future growth.

You ask a great question, and it's awesome to see a high-level leader asking it, because (hopefully) it indicates that those at the top prioritize emotional wellbeing as part of the strategy for building company culture as well as ensuring top quality and efficient productivity as the team grows and the business evolves. As a wellness professional, I'm biased in saying that adding mindfulness in at any stage is a good thing. Particularly at the frantic stage, it's important to do as much as you can to prevent burnout and overwork. It seems impossible to avoid putting in the long hours at the beginning stages of a start up, but that doesnt' mean that mindfulness should lose out. It's possible to do both. There are a number of great mindfulness meditation apps that you could use at the corporate level (I use Mindbody Sessions for my wellness program and would be happy to make an intro), and it would be an easy thing to encourage your team to use as part of your company wellness program. I've also seen companies set aside a conference room once a week to do a mindfulness meditation led by one of these apps (in other words, you don't necessarily have to pay an expert to be present if you can use a pre-recorded meditation from one of these apps). If you'd like to learn more about building a comprehensive wellness solution for your start up (regardless of the stage), I'd be happy to share what we're doing at Livzo. Yoga meditation is much easier to understand and follow. You don't need Apps or iPads for it. There are number of websites with simple instructions, that the one person in the team needs to read once. Controlled breathing and mind stability improves the focus and brings calm to the hectic work schedules of the start ups.

Yoga awareness the best solution.

Yes highly recommend mindfulness as a daily practice for my clients and team members. There are challenges for the type A personalities (myself as well!:-) and have found that after 30 days that it becomes a defined task in the morning ritual to get the day off to a good start. I wrote about mindfulness just yesterday on linkedIn for athletes. take a look at Headspace app to engage with you team of the practice, the simple app is effective.

We employed it in one of our past ventures with our Customer Service Reps (we were in retail financial services) and our customer service scores went through the roof. Depending on the culture of your workforce, how you introduce the practice is critical to its acceptance. In our case, we integrated the mindfulness methods into our customer service training, asking our employees to simply focus on their breath, and looking into the eyes of the customers as they interacted and develop what we termed, "A Moment of Dignity" where for a few moments, the roles of customer and employee melted away into human connection and focused transactional attention. We did not call the practice anything, and there was no spiritual or energetic language that was used to describe the practice. The result was that thousands of customers found reasons to come to our stores (and buy things) for years but they could not explain why they liked to be in our lobbies as much as they did.

Hugh, I love your story about your retail business! That's really inspiring and a great way to bring that practice into people's lives in a non-imposing way and embedding it into the company culture. I'm sure the people who worked in that environment carried that practice into personal interactions -- you probably changed lots of lives! Love it.

Whether "mindfulness" "meditation" "focused breathing" "guided introspecting", etc... incorporating it into a company at any stage can only be beneficial. When people are centered and grounded - when they have a habit of being non-reactive and a skill of breathing through challenges - it benefits during the most energetic time and the more mundane.

Hugh, appreciate you sharing the story and it is insightful and inspiring to hear the fundamental practices of mindfulness (awareness of thoughts and body sensations) being implemented as part of a customer service training. I'm not surprised that your customer scores went up.

Would love to hear from more mid to large start up company leaders about their perspective. I am in the process of writing a blog article about mindfulness implementation in the workplace and am interested in interviewing companies where mindfulness was implemented.

If anybody has any names of companies, or leaders within who have explored this please let me know!
