What are good sites to host your website ?

The world out there is full of options in this space. Kindly share your experience with various service providers. What are good options for a start up ? How these may change as you go pro ?

What are you looking for? What are your needs?

Before you decide on a provider decide what level you need. Shared service? Virtual Private Server? Dedicated machine?

Do you need something like Amazon or Google services?

For my personal site and few corporate sites I use KnownHost and very happy with them.

I'm very happy with the grid hosting plan at Media Temple. Not the cheapest, but very good service despite having been acquired by GoDaddy.

it really depends on what you need, if you are going to have a static website with very low disk space used,
you can pretty much go for price and space.

if you need scalability, fast access and no downtime, cloud services might be the best.

Here is a list that might help you out: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2424725,00.asp

You may also want to research abut Azure and Microsoft Bizspark

Personally I have my domain in GoDaddy and my website in Azure.

Hi Bharat, That's a good question. The following questions will determine which hosting you have to go with: What's the purpose of the website? What features will the website have? How many people will be accessing the website? Regards, Fayaz

Thanks for your replies folks!Awesome people here.
I am developing an ecommerce site..and I want it as busy as...
Since I have decided to develop it myself was keen to compare the options on basis of support they provide and tools they offer. Most of the service providers promise 99.9% uptime, do they keep their promise ? So far has shortlisted ipage , godaddy and blue host, as these appear on most of sites providing feedback on hosting services. Thanks

@Bharat, you can develop an e-commerce site in wixor squarespacewhich will scale and allow you to focus on the business side and not on hosting/programming.
If you are developing your own system you may consider a cloud solution and not a hosting one. take a look at:

This is a partial list and there are plenty of other providers.

Looking around
I analysed variety of cloud and non-cloud providers I found that I need to pay them 600-1000$ monthly for server of my needs.
So, finally I spent 1000$ and bought computer with enough resources reserve.
For last year - its funny - its availability is more than 99%.
And I didn't have UPS.

This is funny, that my job is to help others migrate to cloud. But I personally wouldn't consider my project hosted in cloud. Don't see sence of this for small startups.
