Are you looking for an in-house writer or a freelancer?

One thing you can do is tighten up your job post with better criteria, telling people exactly what you're looking for and the topic(s) you want them to write about.

Some web design agencies have copywriters if you sign up with an ongoing marketing plan with them - this is what I would go with if you're serious because they (people like me) study SEO and content marketing trends - there's an art to writing great blog posts and these folks are usually privy.

You can also try to find a freelancer on elance.com or upwork.com - and you can even try the crowds on community forums on LinkedIn and even Google Plus.

I'm a writer, so feel free to reach out to me!

But as a journalist in the industry for a while, it really helps if you find people who understand out to create a credible editorial message. People are smart. They know when something is just a bunch of marketing copy, trying to sell a product. If you're looking for journalists and pros like that, consider mediabistro.com and journalismjobs.com. I would recommend paying per post and really putting together a smart editorial calendar and plan to effectively communicate your message. Good luck!

Assuming you just want regular content at a reasonable cost checkout BlogMutt.com and tell them I sent you. The owner Scott Yates is a great guy.

In addition to great content, you need to make sure that your writers understand SEO as well. I help my clients by writing blog posts, and social media content, and have a background as a reference librarian. Feel free to contact me.

This is a great question!

Content writing is an art in its own, and many talented writers fail to realize that. The perfect content writer is someone who has a firm understanding of grammar and spelling, can write in a non-technical manner, has basic knowledge of marketing, has basic knowledge of journalism, and, of course, understands SEO. Additionally, if you are looking for bloggers, you need someone who can write with personality. Finding someone that is passionate about your brand/product is a perk as well. Traditional writers might have a few of these characteristics, but they often lack all of them. They are either too academic, too sales-focused, too casual, or too technical... It can be maddening.

In terms of finding the right content writer. It really depends on the goals of your brand. If you want to establish a standardized 'voice' you may want to stay away from sites like blogmutt as they use a variety of writers to deliver a variety of work. Yes, you'll be able to 'fill your blog' with good content, but it may be difficult to find a dedicated writer. The platform is not designed to find specialists.. I personally like Blog Mutt, but I would only use it for a content marketing strategy -- not a branded blog. There are also sites like textbroker and scripted.... same idea different price points.

There are many options, but I would recommend using an online based company or an online based freelancer over going to an offline writing firm because:
  • They typically are more affordable
  • They typically focus on online content
  • You can recruit worldwide

Sites like upwork and freelancer typically have low-cost options, but it will take some time to sort through all of the options. There's even craigslist - if you don't mind sorting through a lot of junk... Point is; if you don't know what you are looking for, finding the right freelancer can be a daunting task.

I personally work as a freelancer as the primary content writer for one brand, and the primary blogger for another. My clients located me through Freelancer.com and Upwork.com. Both clients spent a few weeks making sure I understood the brand before I began handling their content. This is a step I recommend any business take before hiring a content writer full time.

If you need any assistance finding the perfect freelance content writer for your venture, please reach out to me. I provide virtual recruiting services for those seeking American online freelancers and would love to help.
