Press release sites for enterprise software products?

Looking for suggestions re what Web sites are good for sending a press release to. The topic is beta availability of an enterprise software product.

You first need to start by identifying what journalists / bloggers regularly write about the particular topic you have at hand. Then you reach out to them individually.

This is where a PR agency (or freelancer) comes in handy - they not only have built the necessary relationships with those people, but they also know how to best pitch the story, what angle to take, etc. You most likely also want to tie your release to some news cycle happening already.

To be honest, just sending your press release to a website is not going to take you very far.

Would agree with Rodrigo. The days of a startup pushing out a release where anyone cares are over. You need to research who you want to write about you and pitch directly... there's tons written on the subject.

Having said that, if you just want to put a release out there then you can either:

* Spend $1K and put it out on PR Newswire or Business Wire... low probability of success, but higher than alternatives

* Spend $5 on a Fiverr gig and pray.

I'd recommend saving your $1005 and do the research and direct pitching.

Direct pitching is always advisable however, it requires lot of research and persuasion before someone agrees to write about you or your product. Sometimes they can be expensive as well... good example is techcrunch or any similar other Tier 1 sites. As a starter, I believe using services like Vocus (now called Cision) can come very handy. They charge around $3000 for the whole year and allow upto 2 PRs every month.

I heard about Vocus before. Seems like a nice software.

But at the end of the day, it is just that - software. It is not going to identify the right journalists/bloggers/media, start building the relationships you need, build the right pitch, follow-up, etc.

I'm sure the database they have of media/journalists is a great start. But as an entrepreneur, I'm sure you already know what publications you want to tell your story on.

Doing a calculation of $x for a year, for y press releases a month... press releases don't matter. So it is irrelevant how many they offer.

Nothing against Vocus, btw, but for the vast majority of cash-strapped entrepreneurs, I don't think it's the best fit. Unless of course, you already know what you're doing and got PR skills/background, then I'm sure you'll take great advantage of it. I'd rather invest that money in a great small PR agency/freelancer.
