Best way to go about finding a mentor to help my move forward with my ideas?

Currently I am looking to find a mentor and business partners and am looking for the best way to go about it? I work on the road doing construction and use my time after work to go online to reach out to people but have not had any luck so far.

Using the business of entrepreneurialism to turn ideas into products and products into sustainable businesses.
You might start by getting some clarity about the type of help that you are seeking and the kind of relationship you want to form. For example:
  • Are you looking for an investor?
  • potential business partner?
  • paid advisor?
  • sounding board?
Having a clear and confident "ask" makes it much easier for people to respond.

@joe's advice is spot on -- be clear about what you want.

perhaps, just as important is what you bring to the advisor or business partner.

for advisors, if you don't understand why they should advise you (you wanting their advice is your motivation) then you're going to find it hard to engage anyone. the key reasons would be status, money, connections they don't have, something else -- you need to understand what will motivate them.

for business partners, it's not dissimilar. do you bring the keys to a kingdom to which they want access? that's what you're selling a business partner (i'm assuming you are not in a position to compensate them with a competitive salary). how will your goals for them help them achieve their goals for themselves?

lastly, advisors can offer advice. you're still going to have to do it pretty much everything you need done yourself or by your team. and you're still going to have to make all the important decisions.

Currently I am trying to launch a mobile app that I have been developing. I am at the point where I'm in need of funding for the coding and launch and would like to get someone involved with more experience in the field. So far it is just myself and I am learning as I go. Ideally I would like to find a mentor or business partner who would be able to help me move forward successfully with the app. I am willing to put in the work and excited to learn along the way.

I am in Seattle and would be interested in helping. You received some good advice here, and I agree - you need to know what you are asking for. Your response to Liza is a start, but I think you need to be more specific as to what you want and have a clear idea as to what you offer an adivsor.

This is a great question which I often get from entrepreneurs coming through my doors at Infocomm Investments. As joe has pointed out, it is good to be clear of the help you are seeking. This focuses yoursearchand potential mentors would know how they can help. As a starting point, you can consider the types of mentors listed below based on your requirements. This is how I select mentors for the accelerator (e.g. SPH Plug & Play, SBC, UOB), pre-accelerators (e.g. DBS, TAGPASS) and corporate innovation programmes (e.g. Cisco) under Infocomm Investments. You may also think about having more than one mentor since each mentorwouldvalue add in different areas.


  • Skills-based mentors - People who can guide you in entrepreneurship skills independent of the sector your start-up is in. They could provide advise in lean start-up framework, wireframe, pitching etc.
  • Industry-based mentors - People who have deep expertisein the workings ofthe sector/ area which your start-up is in. They can guide you in betterunderstanding the pain points of your customers to assess the relevance of your solution, and help you gain awareness of the obstacles in the sector.
  • Network-based mentors - These arepeople who are typically well connected and can help you open up doors, be it access to your markets/ community to drive traction,investors for funding or government organisations to clear the regulatory hurdles.


Joining an accelerator like those above would be a good way to gain access to mentors and help move your ideas forward. The programme will take you through building your and validating your business model, developing your minimum viable product and developing your pitch. If you are seeking expansion into Asia, you can get in touch with us for our month-long start-up exchange - where we connect you, the start-up, with pro-bono mentors who would plug you into the Singapore & greater Asian ecosystem, and help you build domain and client relationships.
