Was Mayo-backed Better too early?

Although Mayo-backed Better appeared to have a promising future in the healthcare industry, they have announced they will be shutting down by the end of the month. Better had one of the greatest user experiences out there, but it still wasn't enough. What should an entrepreneur do to ensure that his/her company will be successful even when entering as an early disrupter? How could Better & others in the same position, better prepare themselves & their product for user traction & acceptance?

UX is irrelevant without product-market fit. It clearly didn't solve a pain point--there was not an actual market need for what they built.

There is no substitute for user testing and pilot activity. If you believe people will use your app you need to create scenarios that prove each step of the user acquisition process. Initially these tests can be done in small scale scenarios and then scaled with bigger groups to prove out the expectations and troubleshoot the process. It sounds like Better may have built it and not tested the user model.

Starting any venture too early is good. One needs to have surplus liquidity in his or her kitty because awareness by consumers might take a bit of your expected time however the time-consumption won't be long. It is important for the product to grow and develop in the most natural and organic manner.
