How do you promote a new mobile app at a low cost?

I am software developer which is going to become an entrepreneur. Currently I am developing mobile application which will work on iOS/Android and available through app stores. This app has social direction and will be used to help people to reach their actual targets. There will be a feature to follow people that may be interesting for user, so it is more likely social network than app.

What I am looking for is a good lowcost methods to promote application and grow the audience. App will be free to download and also will have a website with How it works presentation. My budget for marketing is over my month salary, over 3-4k$.

Would love to hear what others have done.

All of what you're saying feature wise sounds fine, but none of that means distribution. Wanting to build something social or viral and making it social and viral are two different things. I think it will be tough to get answers specific to you in FD:Discuss, so two things 1. have you done a search on FD or followed growth and growth hacking topics - looks like a ton of relevant discussions on this already. http://members.founderdating.com/discuss/topic/Growth-hacking and http://members.founderdating.com/discuss/topic/Growth and 2. you should be experimenting to see what works for you and your audience - is it FB ads, google ads etc. You can test cheaply and easily but no one knows what will work until it does or doesn't

Denis,
The low cost method is sending e-mailers to increase your installs and not neglecting social media promotion through facebook and other networking sites. Just make sure that you have a good Data base. If you need any assistance in coding or designing the UI of your app, do let me know and I will assist you further.

I'd say you have to identify your target user. Based on your brief description, it appears it's intended for everyone, which will be a tricky conquest.

Identifying your core user base, and if it turns out to be large, a smaller and more manageable target will help you develop a strategy. The thing to keep in mind is to focus more on product validation rather than massive exposure. with a smaller target user group for the initial launch, it will provide you with a direct means to gather feedback on your product and implement those changes.

The benefit of focusing on a smaller group in this fashion is that once you've validated with a vocal and delighted group, you've also essentially created a group of brand ambassadors.

One thing to keep in mind is to ensure that the marketing technique you chose, aligns with the brand of your company. It might also be worth looking into "guerilla marketing techniques" as they are typically high-impact, memorable, and cost effective.

Good luck.

- write blog posts
- shoot a 1 minute video that explains your app
- reach out to the _right_ blogs and journalists. Make sure they write about your type of app
- if you want to buy ads/installs, go with Facebook or Google
