How is Salesforce IoT cloud better?

Salesforce recently announced their new platform, Thunder. How do others believe it will compare in the realm of others like GE Predix, Cloudera, and or Hortonworks? How is Thunder better & what about this new software sets it apart from the rest?

Hi Chloe,

Salesforce's Thunder is so new to the market (announced yesterday) that it's hard to actually see what the differences are, other than reading the announcement. It appears that Salesforce is specifically targeting the IoT market but Hadoop vendorsCloudera and Hortonworkscan easily move into this space because Hadoop is really built for processing semi-structured data. It's not real-time however. You left out Google's Spark which can query faster than Hadoop due to it's in memory file system. From the press release clearly they have been asked by some large customers to be able to process IoT data within Salesforce and make it easy to program actionable events.

Based on some generalized assumptions reading the press release, it just looks like Salesforce is building an easier to use Hadoop for IoT customers to process the potentially large data sets generated from deployed IoT devices. I see this more as an API for Salesforce.com to IoT devices.

Hi Chloe,
Salesforce is already the #1 platform for aggregating, storing,and analyzing all kinds of customer data - CRM, Marketing Automation, Support Automation products all contribute to this in a big way. The press release kind of says that sensors,devices etc.are an extension of who we are. The pervasiveness of wearables, smart phones, automobiles etc. certainly attest to this theory.
Thunder is a way for Salesforce to unify users and their devices. The vision is spot on..but don't know what they have today to accomplish this.

Hortonworks, Cloudera, Spark etc. provide technology to build your own IoT platform..and this is what most IoT platform companies, including Salesforce, will be leveraging. Here are a few Iot platform companies that are much further along...
kaaproject.org- open source IoT platform
Intel, Cisco, Verizon all have offerings in this space combining devices, platforms, and analytics. But none of these have access to customer data like Salesforce..and this will be its biggest advantage.

As Ravi said - SF is trying to capitalize on its captured market. The reality is that MSFT and Amazon Machine Learning environments are miles ahead of the other vendors who basically are Hadoops providers where you still have to hire yourself a PhD ML data scientist.

None of it is specific to IoT really. the only IoT portion is the introduction of a streamed data store - but again here Google, AWS and MSFT are literally years ahead. So. its a smart play by SF.. and SF is fighting hard to stay competitive with the Big Three
