Cofounders/Angels across geographies?

Hi-
I am interested to hear experiences about finding co founders across geographies. How does the interaction work? Also do angels invest in firms that are not in their own country? I had to move out of the location of my customer segment and as a bootstrapped start up find it immensely hard to find a committed cofounder whom i cant see often. Are there any stories with happy endings there, any tips, guidance on how should i look for would be greatly helpful!

Hi Jessica- thanks for the note. i did check that thread and it spoke about how to work remotely after coming in. I was looking for some answers on the step before that- how can i get someone on board who is sitting remotely. Secondly that thread has stopped a couple of years back and things do change in 24 months. So i dont see any harm in looking for new thoughts and experiences that is happening. Thats what forums are for isnt it?

My question is why do you want to work with someone remotely? There are many talented people out there who would make great co-founders for you, but you need to be clear about what complementary capabilities you're looking for. Angels are a different story.

In my advising, when I've come across remote teams, they knew each other before the formation, so brought in people they trusted. Working remotely is still difficult despite technological advances because we humans use skills that don't always translate across the internet to gather the vast wealth of information that helps us understand our team members, especially when you're trying to 'innovate', 'scale', etc - all somewhat nebulous goals.

I really think that in our world there are no limits. You can find the appropriate co-founder beside your house or at the other side of the world. There is no formula or no warranty. I have experience with co-founders being people i trust and having a lot of trouble to work. Even receiving a stab in the back. Certainly it is much easier on a face to face relationship but not necessarily more effective. Results really depend on people, commitment, values, vision and opportunity. Luck is the intersection of opportunity and preparation. If the opportunity comes in and you are not prepared...your are not lucky. This applies to founding a new business. You can prepare yourself for a long time and you just don't get the opportunity. If the opportunity means to build up a business model on a remote co-founder i would do it. There are many risks but these are part of entrepreneurship and it is a long trip to go.

I looked for the right person/people for a long time and was very frustrated. As of today I am working with someone I found on this forum who is half a world away. My other co-founder is a previous friend and co-worker but is in Florida while I am in Michigan. Keep at it and you will find the right person when you least expect to t.

Thanks Mark and Luis for sharing your thoughts. its been very challenging for me as well to get someone who is equally committed as i am. And for the need- well i am not placed in the same geography of my customer segment. And am going to need someone to drive the relationship management for us. As you said, will keep looking and see if i have any luck sometime soon.

I would say its difficult to find trusted partner as People are obviously confused and tend to involve in everything, than in the end doesn't being able to fulfill it later, So needs to be pickey in this case and approach people who are really passionate.

I'm right in at the end of becoming partners with someone from outside the USA for my new startup, literally forming and funding yesterday/today/tomorrow.

We have run into many wonderful advantages, and also many misunderstandings, surprises, and pitfalls. I don't want to post the results yet, but I'd like someone here to ping me in a week and remind me to come back and post if we're through the formation and funding round.

It's going to be helpful in this thread for many people, because both me and my partner are C-Level businessmen, just trying to learn each other's law of the land, and deal with our own perceptions on certain topics.

It's a lot ... we've both been working mostly 20 hour days for going on 6 weeks for something that would have taken only a few days for two people here in USA.

There are a few things I really want to share but need to wait a few days for a few reasons.
