Access to live sports footage, what should a startup do?

Our startup requires access to the use and distribution (eventually) of live sports footage. The world of broadcasting is a very complex jungle to go through. All that is evident from Aereo's rise to fame and bankruptcy.

What should a MVP-stage startup do to get started? If anyone's familiar, what are commercial usage laws for free-to-air channels and networks?

Pretty much any live, televised sports footage will have copyright protection. The art and creativity that goes into a production is where the copyrightable work is. There are some avenues you can go down for select footage from various leagues that would probably be attainable, but they will likely not be major leagues. Secondly, you may look to partner with a property if your product is attractive to them.

It may actually be a good business model to focus on minor leagues and emerging or non prime time sports which do not have national or international broadcast rights. Often times there will still be people who will be interested in watching them.
