What technology awards are actually worth applying for?

We are so focused on building out the product that applying to awards seems silly, or pay to play, but we had a partner apply for one on our behalf (Cannes Gold Lion) and it was actually worthwhile. What awards should we be looking at applying for? We make glasses which correct color blindness, so it is an odd segment to begin with.

First, I want to try that product!
Secondly, the real answer if you are early stage is to apply for the ones that give you some logos, then the ones that your customers might have heard of, then as you get bigger, the ones the industry will care about.

If you target consumers, they have heard of most TV stations, newspapers and magazines, and most of those will give you something. Whereas an opthalmic award (showing my ignorance of your business) might be a very serious and costly affair that is hotly competed for.

Oh, and I don't know if I can post this here as it's mentioning a firm I help out, but a research firm like Two85.com will run a consumer study for you and tell you what your audience reads and watches, and then you will be in a better position to decide what to go for.

For such a product my advice would be to think B2B and align your product with the gatekeepers. These I imagine would be opticians and pharmacies. An award that highlights ease of fitting into everyday life would be good, perhaps something along the lines of a 'customer/user experience' award. Maybe even look at a 'fashion accessory' award. Some research needed here.
