Can get a toll free number for $1.49 a month (+1c a minute for calls). $30 setup.
Easy to use, can setup a nice front-end IVR menu, email voice messages. Can create 'virtual' devices for iPhone, Android etc.

I've been very happy with it!

Give Ray Pasquale a call or shoot him an email ... he's been building a neat virtual PBX offering for small businesses, some nice mobility and remote worker features. Disclosure: I'm an adviser to his company.

We recently started using RingCentral (http://www.ringcentral.com/)and I've been impressed so far (haven't researched pricing, but the functionality seems great).

Unless you really need to provide your customers and prospects with an awful voice mail/IVR experience, I can't think of a good reason to use one. I used to work in telecom, and once worked for one of these companies. They generally run on antiquated technology (10-20 years old, seriously). They are definitely NOT technology innovators. I guess the question I have is what problem do you need to solve? Do you need your employees to have direct dial numbers? Do you need to deal with queued customer support calls? Despite being an old school telecom guy, I rarely get unscheduled calls any more. I just tell people to send me an email and I'll respond right away, set up a phone/skype call if needed. Brian

forbootstrappingwith only a few cofounders and your first customers: google voice for free. I've used skype, ringcentral, grasshopper, lync+SIP trunk, and more for all-virtual-phone-systems.

For many, I think Ringcentral is the way to go... I was on it,switchedto grasshopper for a year, then went back. Ringcentral has the features, a great mobile app, and offers deals on physical phones when they're needed.
