What do you think of Chatter (salesforce)?

Saleforce's Chatter looks to be a good platform. What is your experience using it?

My personal experience (not that of any current or former client or employer) is that it is ok. Determining what you want to use it for will inform whether or not it is a good fit for you.

Thx.

Agreed. I find that Chatter and Yammer suffers from an internal use case every time I have seen it implemented. 75% of the company doesn't use it at all while 23% use it extensively and 1% abuses it and causes HR headaches. I prefer specific use case software for collaboration like Collaborizm or a good google apps/evernote/basecamp installation.

Thanks for your input. Why do you think that 75% of the company doesn't use it? The goal was to create a collaborative environment where sharing is easier than email (and other forms of communication). Love to hear what are the drawbacks from Chatter and the like.

Have you considered http://slack.com or http://rocket.chat if you want to host it internally?

I was wondering whether Chatter has a high penetration rate with enterprise users, and whether it is actually being used. Does anyone have data on Chatter user base or penetration of market?

@gabriel - thanks - I have used Slack and Wanderlust - they work well for specific tasks. I haven't tried rocket.chat though. I wonder how these platforms make money..

Victoria,

to answer your question, "Why do you think that 75% of the company doesn't use it?" From my experience there are a couple of reasons:
1) No definitive use case - As in the company rolls out Chatter or Yammer and does notembed it into their SOP. They just let it loose in to the wild and hope for the best.
2) No immediatebenefitsfor use -No one has any idea how to truly benefit from it except for a small constituency. Some people use it for communication, some people use it for sharing, some people use it for self promotion. Some people think its "just like twitter". Most just continue using the old school tools that they feel comfortable with.
3) Potentially career limiting - They see only downside to using a tool whichpotentiallycommunicates with the entire organization and can never be erased.

Tried to use Chatter in my last startup but it wasn't widely used (cultural) and it wasn't the most effective way to collaborate. I prefer Slack and GDocs for collaboration on projects.

We are learning to use Slack across continents in a 50 person business.
Agree with the comments about having no clear use case. If there's no clear "why", then the "how to's" will be random.
The other major factor with any of these tools is the prevailing culture of the team, as exemplified by the leader.
Although over 60% of us use the tool, it's not super clear 'why', and I'm sure we all sit at our screens wondering what others will think about what we put up. Fantastic opportunity for mind games, which is worse when you're all remote.

Chatter is a solid solution, however Slack is crushing it and the adoption rates are incredible. You seriously need to look at systems with widespread adoption like Slack.
