What does Apple’s new streaming service mean for Spotify?

It's not official - Apple will be releasing a streaming service on June 30. This is Apple's most disruptive move in the music industry since iTunes was released in 2003. The service is $9.99, the same price as Spotify, which might put Spotify in a compromising position. What do you all think about this announcement, and what does it mean for Spotify in the near future?

There are three interesting aspects of the new Apple Music to my mind:
  1. There's a family pricing plan for $15/mo for up to 6 people, which could move some folks off Spotify.
  2. There's a publishing component that artists and labels can use to share all kinds of content with fans (like MySpace).
  3. The system is open to "unsigned" artists, which could undercut the A&R establishment (also like MySpace).
So to me it looks like Spotify + MySpace + family plans, and already installed on your devices (assuming you're part of the Apple ecosystem).

If I were Spotify, Pandora, Rdio, etc, I'd be nervously looking to figure out my next moves.

As per Jake's #2 an #3, the genius behind Apple Music is that they are providing both a distribution channel and a social/engagement channel to musicians, and then adding a bunch of discovery services on top (ranging from radio station model to more algorithmic discovery). This full stack marketplace replaces the mess of Spotify+Facebook+Twitter+musician websites into a coherent service that people go for everything music-related.

The challenge with music is that it's a tiny and shrinking industry... and it's not like Spotify is broadly-loved by musicians anyway.

Well Apple is even less loved than Spotify.
