What is a great email template for initial investor engagement of friends and family round?

I am particularly interested in two types of communication templates. One for setting up a time to meet and the other template to help me secure a referral? I tend to be to wordy and could use a hand.

An excerpt that should help:

An elevator pitch is a brief e-mail that a middleman can forward with a thumbs-up. We crafted this elevator pitch using information we gleaned from one of Marc Andreessen's blog posts about Ning (Marc is also the founder of Netscape):

Subject: Introducing Ning to Blue Shirt
Capital
Hi [Middleman],
Thanks for offering to introduce us to
Blue Shirt Capital. I've attached a short
presentation about our company, Ning.
Briefly, Ning lets you create your own
social network for anything. For free. In
2 minutes. It's as easy as starting a
blog. Try it at: http://ning.com
We built Ning to unlock the great ideas
from people all over the world who want to
use this amazing medium in their lives.
We have over 115,000 user-created
networks, and our page views are growing
10% per week. We previously raised $44M
from Legg Mason and others, including
myself.
Before Ning, I started Netscape (acquired
by AOL for $4.2B) and Opsware (acquired by
HP for $1.6B).
Blue Shirt's investments in companies like
Extensive Enterprises tell me that they
could be a great partner for Ning. We're
starting meetings with investors next
week, and I would love to show Blue Shirt
what we're building at Ning.

Best,

Marc Andreessen

Your e-mail should be no longer than this example (which is already too long).

A Template for talking to your friends and family? Quoi?

The key is your audience. Take a hard look as to why you are wordy - because if you want your company to succeed, you are going to need to have this skill pretty solid. Are you wordy because

  • you are insecure about your idea?
  • you are insecure about your relationship to the person?
  • you don't understand what the interests and motivations are of your audience?
  • you don't have mastery of the language?
  • you are uncomfortable pitching yourself?

Remember that there are lots of good ideas out there. What you are really pitching is the combination of the idea AND YOUR ABILITY TO EXECUTE IT. And you want to indicate to the listener that you understand THEIR needs.

Truly personal, relevant to each individual. The hours of work are worth it instead of using something based on a template.
