Suggestions on web design resources and apps

I'm launching a new web-based app and I'm looking for some tools out there that will help me integrate a new design. It has to be cost-effective, so I'm not looking for a professional designer at this time.

Any suggestions from the community?

Greg, can you be more specific? what are you building the app in? Ruby? If so then a bootstrap front end template like these : wrapbootstrap.com are hard to beat price wise.

Just a slight correction, bootstrap doesn't have any backend language dependencies so it could be used with any site. But I agree with the sentiment, wrapbootstrap is great and they take bitcoin as payment :).

I've found that Bootstrap works nicely. It's a good basic layout, but you will need someone who's good with design to tweak the CSS unless you want to get into the weeds. I have not been so happy with the canned designs from design sites. They are often difficult to modify whereas Bootstrap is a framework in itself.

I just went the wrap bootstrap route myself for a similar project. Just one word of warning - the template I picked looked nice, but on closer examination definitely took a lot of shortcuts and had some things wrong with it that were covered up by the miracles of hard-coding example content... I ended up getting a lot more into the weeds than I initially had imagined. So just be prepared for that... at least bootstrap makes it less painful than it could be.
