Where would you look for a qualified fundraiser for a new digital media venture?

Where would I go to look for a good, qualified fundraiser for a digital media venture? Have had multiple people come along and they talk a good game, but have failed to deliver or simply disappear without a trace. At this point, I'm going to need to cast a wider net and wondering where you all find qualified folks to raise the funds you need to launch your ventures.

We're looking to raise a total of $4.5 million. Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Walter, if this is a venture you have founded, most investors would expect you to directly lead the fund raising, including generating your own leads, doing the pitch and closing. It's one of the multi-talents looked for in an investable entrepreneur.

Hi Walter,

If you're the founder, you need to pitch to investors, never, ever hire someone else to do that. We were in the same boat a while back, and didn't have a network that we could directly raise from, nor could that network connect us to someone we can raise from. We foolishly hired a law firm to represent us. They claimed they could bring in investment from their expansive Rolodex of Angels and VCs. The emails they sent were awful and made it look as though we couldn't do the job ourselves. "Our client is raising money..." is how each email started. As an Angel Investor myself, I know how ineffective and detrimental those emails can be. We pulled back from fundraising and started to expand our network by talking to more people (not asking them for anything) and offering our help in any way we could. It's difficult if you don't have the network - difficult, not impossible. I urge you to sit down with co-founders and staff and learn more about the opportunities within your combined networks, and expand from there. Meeting people from behind a computer is especially difficult, so go to events and mingle, but don't schmooze.

best of luck.

Believe it or not, Washington DC has some strong media investors due to the ISP's and AOL being founded here. I was an early player at PSINet, know all of the AOL folks. Also know many YPOer's that sold their companies (media businesses) back into AOL. The true media angle is Bob Conway and he is in NYC. What is your startup doing? Biz model? My email is [removed to protect privacy] or [removed to protect privacy] - happy to make intro's.

I have no problem pitching to the funding sources. The pitch book and demo are created, the business plan and financial projections are set. I already have over 700 titles in our video library. Media distribution is in place. Advertising is in place. I'm literally sitting on go. I'm a Content Creator so getting the content , distributing the content, and preparing the pitch is what I do. But this is my first time with a venture fund raise so that part of the process is where I need the most help.

I guess to re-phrase the question, where do I find the right person who can get me in front of the best funding sources? Pitching always works better with introductions as I know and that's what the folks who were working with me promised they could do. Get me in front of the right people to make the pitch. I guess that's the question, where do I find the people who at least have connections to make introductions?

Edwin, your email contacts were removed to protect your privacy so I don't see them.

But we are new digital lifestyle network. In short, Netflix meets Food Network, HGTV, Travel Channel, DIY, Animal Planet with a little QVC. ContemporaryLiving.tv is the current website with some sample programming. You can also see some of the hosts who will be participating in the network.

Send me an NDA - I do sign them and take them seriously... Referring to another thread on FD. I will read what you have and if it merits intro's, will make them for no charge. I am not a fan of folks that line up to take fees for helping an entrepreneur. E.

From my time working in nonprofits, we seek development / fundraising people mining thru this organization's website.

www.afpnet.org
Association of Fundraising Professionals

Fundraising incorporates target marketing, research and CRM principles, but has some nuances that some of the people you engaged in the past may not understand.

Once you have some candidates, ask them to put together a strategic approach (1-2 pages) on how they would identifying prospective investors and what steps / activities they would use to build relationships up to and including the introduction to you, the person who pitches and make "The Ask".

These people will probably not work for stock or commission, so you will need to understand their approach before you hire them.
