Leveraging local college students for carrying out user research?

I need to go out and make specific observations about people on the streets and ask a couple of questions. Wondering if I can get students from the local colleges to do this for me. I can see it as an interesting project if Market/User Research is part of their curriculum and a way to make a buck on the side for them.

Anyone tried this before? Would love to hear of potential pitfalls I should be wary of?
Also, any tips on the best way to find students (are there boards for such gigs? approach the college?) would be greatly appreciated.

p.s.: I've seen Gigwalk, and they seem expensive. But do chime in if you've had experience with them.

Thanks!
