How to popularize blogs for your startup in certain situations?

This question is an offshoot from a recent discussion around the same topic: http://members.founderdating.com/discuss/2162/When-should-you-start-a-blog-for-your-startup/

Let us say that we are preparing to launch a startup blog. However, quite a few of us might test waters with product launches while still having full-time gigs (the so-called nights-and-weekends entrepreneur). In this situation, it may not actually be a good idea to use LinkedIn as the blogging platform or share widely in your social media circles. How would one go about publicizing the startup blog then? Are there other ideas?

I understand that a blog on the wild can be stumbled upon by anyone, including folks who one might want to avoid in the first place. The question is more about how to minimize those probabilities.

Short and sweet, I think the answer is no. No hiding. Find a way to make it okay with your day job to have your weekend job. See if the two can benefit each other. The brands - whether IT or Consumer - that make a difference in people's lives are the brands that are worth investing in, selling and engaging with. The people who start the brand are the brand. Maybe you could hide later, but not in the beginning.

First, I wouldn't use LInkedIn as your startup blog - kind of misses the point of creating your brand and getting SEO credit. Second, agree with Kim find a way to do it that isn't a big deal. Blogging is pretty normal these days, so creating a brand or a competency could be seen as good by your employer. If you're not comfortable then have a ghost writer or name. It's less about you and more about the company. but anything you put on the internet is findable.

It's hard to hide when you're trying to create visibility. If you're trying to extend your reach and learn as much as you can about the viability of your startup then you need to just put it out there. We started with a standard Wordpress site and then integrated the WP blog into our domain once the first landing page site was ready. This got our SEO going once we did. Try and make your blogs informative so they are a "good read" and not just a constant sales pitch. Make sure to capture emails and build your subscription lists. And definitely use platforms like Bufferapp and Hootsuite to blast out your blog to your social feeds in regular intervals. Wash, rinse and repeat.
