Should you go after investors that already invested in your market?

Is it in investors interest to invest in companies that would fall into the same competitive market? Is it risky to share information about your company, with an investor who has invested in similar market? Curious about what people have experienced.

I'd say don't go after someone(s) who already invested in a current or likely competitor or something that would likely move into your space but look for broad themes. For example - do they invest in ecommerce? Marketplaces? Hardware etc. If they invest in hardware and you're a hardware company reach out.

A well known seed investor told me a couple of weeks ago that he would not invest in the same idea at the same time in the same geography. I thought that was very helpful and just let me know I didn't need to go after him - when in doubt just ask directly? There's very little lost if you just say, "my company does XYZ, you have invested in ABC, could you see yourself investing in both?"

I also think a good investor would tell you when they have a competitive company and you're in danger of over sharing.

It is not in investors' interest to back companies that compete with each other, and none of the investors I know would do that. Remember, they are betting that *your* team will the the one that provides their 10-100X return in your category.
