Off-the-shelf, HIPAA-compliant matching software?

Do you know if there are any (or where to find) HIPAA compliant person-to-person matching software programs (akin to mentoring or dating matching software)? I can't find anything through basic online searches.

I wonder if there has even been a market for programs that could match patients and providers based on a set of criteria (including personal health information) built into an algorithm.

Thoughts?

I'm not personally aware of any meeting your criteria. There are many sites connecting patients with other patients with similar illnesses and treatments though. And of those sites I don't believe ANY are HIPAA compliant.

@Charlene, thanks for starting this discussion. Could you elaborate a bit more on what you are seeking? As @Bill points out there are a number of search services, mostly through payers, that let patients find providers. Those sites don't require or at least use your PHI (Protected Health Information) or PII (Personally Identifiable Information) data.

I'm very familiar with making companies and Business Associates HIPAA compliant. Feel free to ping me with more specifics if you like

I have build a solution for two healthcare providers with similar idea. Both the healthcare providers participate in ACOs and other pay-for-perfomance payment plans. They have create a private HIE to match patients (cohorts) with specific conditions and create a support system.

I am not sure but I think Mayo Clinic has a patient portal that has social media solution. Similar to meetup kinds of mechanism.

Happy to help take this conversation further if there is an interest.

I would carefully examine your business case before heading down this road - provider "choice" is largely dictated by particulars of your insurance plan and your location, making a matching engine not especially useful. Unless you're planning on targeting those that are not beholden to insurance contracts, which is of course a much smaller demographic.

@Tony, you are correct about the insurance plans driving the choice of providers.

Albeit, with the Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) the model is shifting towards keeping patients out of the hospitals (and prevention). This means, the healthcare providers have to create tools to find patients that match certain criteria (conditions, age, geography), create a risk profile for them, create a specific treatment plan based on the risk.

The providers get incentives if they can prevent an incident in the treatment year. This is achieved by educating the cohorts, proactively monitor them and making sure they participate in their own well being.

This model requires engaging patients together. Large healthcare systems like Medstar, NYP, Virtua Health, Cleaveland Clinics, Providence have private HIEs that extend the reach across hundreds of miles and include referring physicians and smaller hospitals.

Hope this helps. Happy to share more on private HIE, ePHR's role in ACOs and chronic disease management.
