Effective Guerilla Marketing Tactics for Consumer Apps?

Having spent the last year developing a consumer photo/video app, I am now ready to start marketing.
What are some cost-effective ways of acquiring and growing a new user base in the B2C sphere?

Hi Eugene

I suggest you liaise with FaceBook, they have a Start to Success Program which is cost effective as compared to one off PPC programs they offer otherwise. Use Flurry for Metrics and Conversions.

Start a challenge! (Like the ice bucket challenge)

Maybe something photo/video related in your case.

It is difficult to replicate the success of the Ice Bucket Challenge. But here are some fundamental principles how your challenge should be:

Doable. Consider the Harlem Shake craze, and how easy it was for any group of people to recreate it within minutes. The easier it is to do, the likelier it is that people will do it.

Highly social. Being able to nominate your friends turns a one-off challenge into a conversation starter and a spectator sport.

Flattering to your participants. People want to look good, whether they're influential bloggers or a bunch of teenagers bored in the summer.

Your Challenge should allow them to perform honorabily by 'stepping up' to the plate. At the same time, you got to look important for being a nominee in the first place.

Most importantly, you wouldn't want to look like a self-important attention seeker because you were just responding to a challenge.

If you don't want in, there should be an elegant way to get out!

The campaign flattered participants by demonstrating that they were brave, and participants wouldn't feel insecure if everyone did it together.

In your case maybe try :

  1. Find a creative use for the app. Let them feel good about them-self (ex:
    • Help somebody in need (carry groceries for an old lady, help a disabled person cross the street)
  2. Show admiration on camera for your Hero
  3. Challenge your friends to be a hero within 24hrs or donate $50 to X Cause
