Resources for finding total addressable market?

Was wondering if anyone had any good resources for finding TAM or any pertinent industry information as startups prepare investor decks and one pagers.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

For ballpark order-of-magnitude TAM, the total revenue, number of employments and businesses are good for my purpose, without having to pay for the detailed reports.

Great topic! As @Maya points out it would help to know the market/industry. Here are some thoughts I've published in other threads on the same topic. Researching your market will be one part science and one part of refining it down to the right level based on your product or service.

Your pitch should be as short as possible but no shorter. That is, use the minimum amount of words or pictures to fully describe the above items. The size of the market should be something you can estimate within an order of magnitude. I call this the addressablemarket. Addressable markets are what and who you can reasonably target. As an example, anyone should be in the market for a Kindle. If you start the filtering to make it addressable (this is only an example and not meant to be 100% accurate):

  • Total population of Earth is about 7 Billion
  • Worldwide literacy rate is 84.1% (http://www.indexmundi.com/world/literacy.html) - I haven't cross checked this. It only includes adults over 15 years old
  • Perhaps you want to only market in the US. Literacy rate is 86% (on 371 million people)http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/09/06/illiteracy-rate_n_3880355.html
  • 76.5% of the US population are over 18http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/00000.html
  • Using the above numbers we are down to a market size of about 244,000,000
  • The cost of the Kindle makes it a luxury. Say only 30% (and this is where some research should have been done) can afford the Kindle. About 73 million people. A large number but that's market you can address. It doesn't mean 100% of them will buy it
  • The device is small and portable which means it can be sold through any brick and mortar retailer willing to put up the shelf-space.
