Is there a service/software to track who downloads your deck?

Hi, I'm sending out an update to advisors, and want to include a link to a deck, but I'd like to track WHO downloads it. Is anyone aware of a simple service to do this? Please advise.

Where is this deck? On your own website or on some sharing service e.g. SlideShare?

Dimitry, I haven't loaded it anywhere yet. Right now, it's just in dropbox. I'm trying to figure out where I should load it so I can track WHO downloads it and when. It's proprietary, so I don't want just anyone to be able to download.

One decent option to control access is to use google docs. You can assign people read only access with no download rights. I think you can also track access, although not sure how robust this capability is.

I've been using Docsend: https://docsend.com/. It's really great, tells you who they are, who they're sharing it with, and how far they made it through the deck. Highly recommend.

If you're storing the file on a website like Ge.tt where you have an account, you can visit your library there to see how many downloads.

Google Docs should work. Or you generate individual download links for each of your advisors so you see who clicked the link. If you send via mail services like MailChimp, they give you analytics tools to track open rate and specific links clicked.

Julia, Docsend sounds really interesting. I'll check that out. I also use google docs and the idea of a different shortened URL is a good hack.

If you're already using DropBox, I think it offers tracking capabilities, so problem solved.

Although, if I had to solve this problem as specified, I'd upload multiple copies of the deck to my server and give each advisor a link to a separate copy. The server logs (or Google Analytics) will show when each file was accessed, and you'd know who it was because no one else knows about this particular link. But that may be too technical.

Of course, if all I wanted was to update my advisors, I'd just email them the deck as an attachment and ask them for receipt confirmation.

A quick and dirty solution: Use a URL shortening service that will give you metrics on click-through. Create a link that points to your slide deck which is unique for each person. Then track which link belongs to who and check back every so often.

+1 for the link shortener, which can also work for other links in your email. Goo.gle is one by google and bit.ly is another very popular one.

cheers
